I have now set up a PayPal account, to which you can send money if you would like to support the site by helping to pay my hosting costs. The costs of running this site are 16 USD per year for the hosting itself, plus 13 USD per year for the domain name. Total 29 USD. So as you can see, the hosting is very inexpensive, but you are very welcome to help me with it nevertheless!
In future, I may look at buying upgrades to my web hosting that will add to the cost, but I'm not contemplating doing this at the moment. For example, a dedicated IP address (along with appropriate steps taken in the site's code) would mean that more emails would get through to users without being blocked as spam. It is also possible, although unlikely, that I might change hosting providers, which might also alter the cost of hosting.
If you donate 5 USD or more (after PayPal's charges) you can have a little badge next to your name when you post messages (like the magic wand badge next to my name on this post), and on your User Details page. This badge will remain there for not less than 2 years. NB: I need to know who is donating money in order to give you a badge, see below.
I will keep details of how much money has been donated, and I will keep a public record of how much hosting has been paid for (at present, hosting for the site is paid up until the end of January 2011). (If hosting costs change then the date may change accordingly.)
It goes without saying that all users are welcome to continue to use the site without paying any money whatsoever.
Any money sent to help with the site's costs is sent purely as a gift, and the sender recognises that no improvement in service is promised as a result of the transfer of funds, either for the user personally or users of the site at large. The sender recognises that Brass Online continues to be offered on an "as-is" basis, with no guarantee of good service or indeed of basic competence.
I intend both now and in the future to use this web hosting not only to host Brass Online, but also to host other small personal projects, including but not limited to a personal photo album and a personal filestore for small files. These projects do not use anywhere near the bandwidth of Brass Online, though they may use more storage space (storage space is not a great concern for this site).
To send money:
Log in to your PayPal account and click "Send Money" (next to "My Account"). Under "To", enter firstname.lastname@example.org. Next, enter an amount. For example, enter 5 in the left-hand box and then select "US Dollars" from the drop down list. (You are also welcome to send GBP, that is, pound sterling.) Underneath that, click the "Personal" tab and make sure that the "Gift" option is selected.
I believe that an option is provided for you to pay the PayPal fees that accompany a donation. You are free to do this or not as you wish. If your gift is 5 USD or more after PayPal's fees are taken into account, you can have a badge, as mentioned above. You should let me know who you are by telling me your account name and ID number. Your account ID number is the number (between 1 and 4 digits) at the end of the URL to your User Details page. You can see it by hovering the mouse cursor over the "User Details" link at the top of most pages.
Regardless of how much you donate, you will be thanked on the site's Credits page. You can be thanked under a different name to your user name if you want. You should let me know what name you would like to be thanked as if it is different to your user name. If the PayPal interface does not give you the option to leave a note for the recipient, send an email to email@example.com telling me how much you donated and giving the other details.
You may also donate anonymously if you want. If you do this, please attach a note (or send an email) saying explicitly that you are donating anonymously, so that I know you have not just forgotten to attach your details or failed to work out how to do so.

I did not see any option to pay for the PayPal fees.

Was that just on the first page (where it asks you how much you'd like to send), or did you click through to the next page and still have no options? I confess I'm not certain how it works yet.

Oh, reading their Help page more closely, it looks like the fee only applies if you pay by card. If you pay using your PayPal balance there is no fee. So I would guess it leaves that question at least until you indicate how you would like to pay.

Thankyou to sungarden3, Shibumi14 and ProTomato for donating! Donations currently total $29 + ?4.63, which is enough to pay for one year's hosting at the current rate! This means that hosting is paid for unti the end of January 2012.

Change of policy. To get a star, the amount you donate just needs to be $5 before PayPal's fees are applied, not after. On most donations there are no fees to pay, so this affects relatively few donors.

Thankyou to Ant?nio Gon?alo Santos da Silva Moura and grouchysmurf for donating. Donations currently total $59.50 + ?27.74. I haven't checked but I'm pretty sure that's about the cost of 3 years' hosting at the rate I'm currently paying. (I don't know which is Ant?nio's account so I haven't given him a star at present.)

Thankyou to Tuomo Salo and Larry Doherty for donating. Donations currently total ?30 + $147. I paid the hosting/domain name costs in January, which reduces it a little, but I should note here that (with costs as they are at present), that is enough to keep the site running for a few years - users have been very generous in giving their support.

Are you looking for donations for the site redesign Philip?

Kicked in a few bucks after seeing The Star on jalex1ff's profile.

I think I'm up-to-date now in making sure everyone has a star icon who should have, and everyone is thanked on the FAQ page. Please drop me a line if I've missed you out. All gifts are very much appreciated, although I should make it clear again that I've received enough to fund the site's expenses for the near future.
LAMBOLT, unfortunately the resource that's in short supply for me is time, not money!

Let me know if there's anything time wise I could help with too then Philip!
