Hello, I'm new to this game. I've only played it once in real life before now coming here. Anyway..
1) When you build an industry that requires coal, you have to pick the coal from somewhere. Do you always have to pick from the closest coal stock, or can you pick from any coal mine that's connected to the city in question?
2 a) I recall it being allowed to use (buy) coal from the demand track (when buildning industry that requires coal) as long as the industry is connected to a harbor or external market, is that right?
b) In that case, does it matter if the harbor in question is flipped or not?

1) Closest (fewest links traveled). If a tie, you can choose.
(b) For questions about connections to the outside, there is no difference between an unflipped port, a flipped port, or the external locations (Midlands, etc). I believe the rulebook refers to 'constructed ports' to label this concept.

In addition, you cannot buy coal from the demand track if your chosen building location is connected to a "normal" source of coal.
