I connected Liverpool to Southport. Tried to build a shipyard on space#3, then got the message. Does Southport count as a port? Assuming that was a port, therefore liverpool is now connected to a port. Why can't I buy coal from the demand track?

No, Southport isn't a port.
A Port is either of two things:
- a player's Port industry tile - an external location (on the Lancashire board: The Midlands, Scotland and Yorkshire)
You can tell if a location having no industry spaces is an external location, because it will feature an anchor symbol.
