In game 4058, Tres Brass, I'm green. As the last action of the canal phase I tried shipping cotton. I have 4 mills, and there's an unflipped red port. I tried selling to the distant market first, and failed (drew a -3 and ran out of demand). However, I think I should have still been able to sell to the red port but what actually happened was that I was notified I was done making decision for now , my turn was over and the game moved to the rail phase. Please check.

The rules state that if you try to sell to the distant market and market demand runs out, your turn is over. That is one reason why most of the time you should sell to ports first and then sell to the distant market if you plan to do both of these types of sales in a turn.

Yes, I'm afraid that the game's behaviour in this case was correct.
