this seems to bea bug, I have to buy coal from my opponent. I have coal available AND connected, if I try, I get an error. If I try to buy from the demand track I get the following message:
"The system found the following problems with your move:
You cannot buy coal from the Demand Track, as there is coal available in Lancashire for you to use.
Click here to return to the game."
where is lancashire? Why can't I use my own coal? Hate to give my opponents points!

Lancashire is the whole board, from Fleetwood to Stockport and from Liverpool to Rochdale.
I don't have the link for the game you are talking about, but I guess the reason you have to choose your opponent coal mine is you are forced to pick coal in the nearer spot where it is avalaible when you build somethin that needs coal.
It is forbidden to buy coal or iron from the demand track as long as there are any on the board.

You have to take coal from the source nearest to the place you want to build. Distance is measured in constructed canal/rail links. If there aren't any coal sources connected to the place where you want to build, but you're connected to a port, then you can buy from the demand track. That's the only situation in which you can do that.

ok, relatively new to the game so thanks...odd thing was there was coal available all over, but it would NOT let me build from ANY of the sources...meh...I'll just give points to people I guess. Thanks all
