Site efficiency and computational load

This thread is open.

I have been alerted by the University's computing services that this site is using an inordinately large amount of computing power (meaning CPU time) when seems to be disproportionate to its activity. I've been asked to take a look at reducing the amount of work the site creates for the computers. With this in mind, I am disabling some of the fancier things that some of the pages do and removing some non-essential features of the site. I am also going to be modifying the way that some pages work, which may result in things breaking from time to time (I will try and fix problems I cause as soon as I am alerted to them). I apologise for this, but I hope it is obvious that I do not want this site to be any sort of inconvenience for the University of Sheffield and that I have to make sure it is well-behaved.

I should, I hope, be able to make the site more of a "good citizen" but if I cannot achieve this then I may feel it necessary to move the site to another host; again, I ought not to generate problems for the University.

Have you done an analysis of which parts of the code are taking the most CPU resources? Having gone through optimization efforts before, I know that running an analyzer to pinpoint which lines of code are responsible for performance issues can have surprising results...

I am unable to access any of the several games in which I am involved. A message I receive says "parsing error." This really bites.

I am getting the same error, specifically

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '}', expecting ',' or ';' in /webusers/nu4wg/public_html/brass/board.php on line 178

I got the errors, but then go into my games, but now it says I need JavaScript enable...but it is enabled.

I am having the same problem ges is -- the action interface says javascript is disabled, which it is not, and it is impossible to make actions at all.

I am now able to access my games.

Was able to play in one game, then got the Javascript not enabled error in the next one.

In two of my current games, I got that 'JavaScript' error message. One of them had the message occur after I played my first card.

I was able to play moves in one game, in another game I was able to play the first card and then got the Javascript disabled/page loading message. I have tried reloading that page, closing the browser, coming back in and still get the Javascript disabled message.

I made my moves in 2 of my games (a 3-player game and a 4-player game), but I am getting the Javascript disabled message in my 2-player game.

Still getting the Javascript error.

I was able to make a move in game 347, but 358 has the Javascript error.

Problems in that game have been resolved; the log contains garbled messages, but otherwise the game should be fine.

Hammerite, it looks like the turn track has not been updated with the money spent. As this will affect turn order, I'll wait until you confirm this is ok too.

You are correct, I forgot to fix the amounts spent in the games I corrected. I have tried to go through and make changes to some of the games that would have needed this correction, but I am likely to have missed some of them. Please let me know about any games you notice where the amounts spent are incorrect.
