Coal can only come from the Demand Track via a constructed port.
In the game "Open - No Passord" ( see http://wargamessoc.union.shef.ac.uk/brass/board.php?GameID=5 ), Red constructed two rails with coal from the Demand Track. This move should not be allowed since coal cannot reach the link locations from a constructed port.
Here is the log entry:
Red (newrev) uses a Manchester card to build a Tech Level 2 Iron Works on the 4th industry space in Manchester, taking coal from Green (rgmnetid)'s Tech 2 Coal Mine on the 1st space in Manchester (which flips). The newly constructed Iron Works sells 4 iron cubes to the Demand Track for ?10. For his second action, he uses a Preston card to build the rail link between Bolton and Manchester, taking coal from the Demand Track for ?1. He then builds the rail link between Manchester and Warrington & Runcorn, taking coal from the Demand Track for ?2.

The fault in the website's code that caused this to happen has (I believe) been fixed. This bug caused some parameters of the game to be set incorrectly at the time of the canal phase scoring, so I have edited these inaccuracies manually. Everything should work fine in that game now. (I have not removed the rail links built by Red in the game.)

It looks like the links are still there. And I messed up and built a coal mine whose coal went to the offshore supply. Is it possible to back up to Red's turn?

OK, yes I can do that. I see that it is your turn to move, so DON'T MAKE ANOTHER MOVE IN THE MEANTIME!

(I'm not telling you off, I'm just saying, you mustn't do anything else to the game while I edit it)

Oh, I just noticed that it's been a few goes since it happened, I'm afraid it's a bit too much work for me to undo all that (it requires me to work out what values everything should be set to, then edit that into the database manually). It'll have to stay that way I'm afraid. The problem should not appear in future games.

Thanks for looking into this. So was it the case that this error only occurs in certain circumstances? Glad we caught before too many others are affected by it.

Thanks for trying!
(And for fixing it in the future!)

It would have occurred in every game in the rail phase, so it's very good that it was caught. Basically the data from the canal phase about which towns are linked to ports and which are linked to each other was not being cleared away and replaced with fresh data, due to an oversight. All the other games that are in the rail phase have already built up a large network of rails so it is unlikely to be a big issue for them.
